Ears, Nose & Navel After getting a new piercing, or treating an existing one there are some rules you should follow to ensure the safe healing of the tissue. During the first 2-4 days swelling will be at its most and should reduce over the following 2 weeks. You may experience discharge, redness and soreness at times as the piercing begins to heal. The red ring immediately around the piercing site is a scab/blood clot and should not be removed, otherwise you risk breaking the healing tissue and prolonging the healing time. Excess discharge/crust that is clear, white or slightly yellow in colour, may form around this. This should be gently removed when washing or cleaning the piercing. - Wash daily with warm running water. - Gently clean the surrounding area with antibacterial or natural soap. - Rinse away any soap residue. - Do not use fragranced or chemical soaps. - Allow the area to air dry, or pat dry with a clean paper towel. - Do not use your bathroom towel as it contains bacteria. - Do not submerge the piercing for at least 4 weeks. This means No swimming & No baths. Standing water harbours bacteria also and will lead to infection, therefore do no sleep with wet hair whilst healing an ear piercing. - Up to 2 times daily (and no more than 2 times) you should use a sterile saline solution to moisten the area, and a clean cotton bud or gauze to gently remove any excess matter from the piercing. - Do not twist, turn or alter the position of the jewellery unless it is sitting uncomfortably. - Please ensure that if you are touching your piercing, whether that be to clean it or make an essential adjustment, wash your hands before, inbetween each piercing and after doing so. This it to avoid the transfer of bacteria. Please return enquire about downsizing your piercing 2-4 weeks after your initial procedure. Space is allowed for swelling during the initial stage of healing, and should be reduced to avoid migration or rejection. Your piercing is to be treated like an small wound, failure to do so could lead to infection or rejection. Extreme swelling, bright redness or yellow/green puss is a sign of infection and cannot be treated by a piercer, you should consult your doctor as other treatment may be required. My most favourite adage for aftercare of piercings is WASH IT GENTLY & LEAVE IT ALONE
