Wash your hands thoroughly prior to cleaning your new piercing.
Use a sterile saline solution to clean your piercing twice a day. I recommend using Neilmed (pictured above) to clean the site. Spray directly onto the piercing. Pat dry with a kitchen tissue or gauze. Alternatively, use a cool setting on a hairdryer to remove any remaining moisture. We want to make sure we dry our piercings to avoid irritation. Neilmed is sold at Gucky and available online.
For oral piercings, rinse with an alcohol-free mouthwash after eating/drinking anything that isn't water for the first couple of weeks. Try to avoid alcohol as much as possible and stay hydrated to help reduce swelling.
Do not remove the jewellery as this can cause the piercing to close quickly. Avoid twisting/rotating the jewellery. Avoid touching or playing with the jewellery throughout the healing to prevent spreading bacteria to the fresh wound.
Be careful not to catch the jewellery when you are getting changed, using towels, brushing your hair etc.
Try not to sleep on the same side as your new piercing. If this is something that you struggle with, I recommend using a piercing pillow. Please click the button at the bottom of the page for one I personally find useful (this link also gives you an automatically applied discount if you do decide to get one!)
Please come back for your 6-8 week check-up appointment to downsize the jewellery used for your initial piercing, and to check-in with your piercer :-) it is important to downsize the length on the bar to prevent snagging and migration.
Note that some bleeding/dried blood, localised swelling, bruising, or tenderness is normal.
