Hair Extension Aftercare Guide
To maintain the beauty, longevity, and integrity of your hair extensions, it is essential to follow a consistent and gentle aftercare routine. Proper care will ensure your extensions remain soft, full of life as well as seamlessly blended with your natural hair.
Washing Routine
To maximise the lifespan of your extensions, minimise hair washing where possible. Ideally, wash your hair once or twice per week using sulphate-free products to prevent dryness and colour fading.
When washing, focus shampoo on the scalp only, gently cleansing without rubbing the product through the ends. As you rinse, the shampoo running through the hair will be sufficient to cleanse the mid-lengths and ends, which naturally do not become oily due to extensions lacking a natural oil source.
Hydration & Nourishment
Hair extensions require consistent moisture to maintain their softness and shine. Apply a nourishing hair oil twice daily, morning and evening, through the mid-lengths and ends. Extensions will absorb what they need, so you cannot over-oil them.
Avoid applying oils or conditioners directly at the roots, particularly with tape extensions, as this can weaken the adhesive and cause slippage.
Incorporate regular deep conditioning masks into your routine to keep the hair healthy, hydrated, and silky.
Brushing & Detangling
Always brush your extensions using a soft bristle or extension-friendly brush.
Begin brushing from the ends of the hair and gradually work upwards, supporting the hair where necessary. This gentle method prevents unnecessary tension and protects both your natural hair and extensions.
Be sure to brush in between extension rows or sections, again starting from the ends and working upwards to avoid pulling through tangles which can lead to matting.
Take extra care when brushing tape extensions, as catching the brush on the tapes may damage the seal and allow water or product to break down the adhesive.
Styling & Heat Protection
Excessive heat can shorten the lifespan of extensions and cause colour fading. Always apply a heat protection spray before using styling tools and avoid the highest heat settings whenever possible.
Where possible, minimise the use of heated styling tools to preserve the quality and longevity of the hair.
Sleeping & Hair Protection
Never sleep with wet hair, as this can cause matting and damage. Always ensure your extensions are fully dried, ideally using a blow dryer on a low to medium heat setting.
For overnight protection, wear your hair in a loose bun, braids, or heatless curlers. This prevents tangling and friction while you sleep.
Use only silk scrunchies or claw clips to tie your hair, as these are gentle and reduce breakage.
Protecting Colour
To maintain the vibrancy of your extensions:
- Avoid hot showers, which may cause colour to fade more quickly.
- Protect hair on sunbeds and in strong sunlight to prevent brassiness or fading.
- Use a UV protection spray when exposed to the sun.
- Keep hair away when applying SPF, as some sunscreens can discolour extensions.
Water Exposure
Whenever possible, avoid chlorine and seawater, as these can damage and dry out the extensions.
Toning & Colour Care
Extensions should never be bleached. Professional toning may be carried out occasionally if required.
Avoid applying purple shampoo directly onto extensions, as it can cling to the hair and cause dryness or uneven toning. If needed, gently tone the hair by either:
- Diluting purple shampoo with a regular sulphate-free shampoo, or
- Creating a purple bath by mixing a small amount of purple shampoo in a sink of lukewarm water, carefully monitoring the ends to ensure they do not absorb too much pigment.
Tape Extension Care
If you have tape extensions fitted:
- Do not wash your hair for 48 hours after fitting or refitting.
- Avoid applying oils, conditioners, or heavy products near the root, as these can weaken the adhesive bond and cause slippage.

Following these guidelines will help maintain the quality, colour, and longevity of your hair extensions, keeping them looking beautifully soft, full, and luxurious for as long as possible.
PLEASE NOTE- Hair extensions do not have a expiry date, your extensions lifespan will solely depend on how well they’re looked after.
