Registering Your Business

Starting a career in the hair, beauty, or wellness industry, whether you’re working from home, running a mobile service, or opening a studio, is exciting. But before you start booking clients or designing your brand, you need to make it official by registering your business.

Your business structure determines how you operate and handle your taxes. In the UK, there are two main options:

Sole Trader

Limited Company

Best For

Freelancers, mobile stylists/therapists, or those testing the waters before expanding

Salon/spa owners, training academy founders, or professionals planning to grow and hire staff

Pros

• Quick & simple to set up
• Full control & flexibility
• Keep all profits

• Limited liability protection
• Potential tax advantages
• Increased credibility with suppliers, landlords, and investors

Cons

• Personally liable for debts & claims
• Harder to access funding
• Can appear less “established” to brands/suppliers

• More admin & compliance (Companies House filings, Corporation Tax)
• Director duties & responsibilities
• Higher accountancy costs

Extra Considerations

• Register with HMRC as self-employed
• File annual Self Assessment tax return
• Pay Income Tax & National Insurance on profits
• Strongly recommended to have public liability & treatment insurance

• Register with Companies House
• Must file annual accounts & Corporation Tax return
• Can pay yourself via a mix of salary & dividends
• Separate business bank account required

Our recommendation: If you’re just starting as a one-person mobile stylist, nail tech, or therapist, a sole trader setup is usually the simplest. If you’re planning to open a salon or wellness space with staff, a limited company gives more protection and looks more professional.

Getting Started as a Sole Trader

If you’re working for yourself as a freelancer, mobile stylist, therapist, or technician, becoming a Sole Trader is the simplest route.

  1. Register with HMRC as self-employed.

  2. Provide your details so HMRC can set you up for tax.

  3. You’ll receive your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), which you’ll use when filing your Self Assessment each year.

This option is quick and flexible - perfect if you’re testing the waters or working independently.

Getting Started as a Limited Company

If you’re planning to grow, open a salon, spa, or wellness clinic, a Limited Company could be the stronger choice.

  1. Choose a unique business name that no one else has registered.

  2. Register your business with Companies House.

  3. Once accepted, you’ll be issued a Certificate of Incorporation, which legally confirms your business exists as a company.

This option offers more protection and credibility, especially if you plan to hire staff, rent premises, or work with larger brands.
