Save Money Knowing What you Can Write Off

Running your expenses through your business is essential and often overlooked.

You can reduce your taxable income by deducting legitimate business expenses. Common ones include:

  • Rent for your treatment room or home studio

  • Supplies, tools, and products

  • Training, courses & education (like this course!)

  • Insurance, website, booking systems, software (like Solo!)

  • Marketing, ads, and client gifts

  • Business-related travel and uniforms

💡 Tip: Keep receipts or digital records of all purchases … they add up!

Knowing what travel expenses you can claim could save you hundreds each year.

Travel

If you're a mobile hairdresser or beauty therapist, travel can be one of your key business expenses—and one you can often claim back, whether you're using your own car, someone else’s, or public transport. Even if travel is only a small part of your work, those costs add up.

You can only claim for business-related travel, like visiting clients, attending training, or going to the bank to deposit earnings.

If you use a car or van regularly, it's likely your biggest expense. The simplest way to claim is through HMRC’s Fixed Mileage Rate:

  • 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles

  • 25p per mile after that

This rate covers fuel, insurance, wear and tear, and depreciation—so no need to calculate each separately.

Important: Fines (like parking or speeding tickets) aren’t claimable, even if they happen during a business trip.
